Kirkuk Municipal Solid Waste Landfill

In 2006, the local government in Kirkuk requested that we design and assist in construction of the first successful landfill in Iraq which meets EPA Subtitle D design requirements for Municipal Solid Waste. The landfill is approximately 200,000 square meters (50 acres) and will provide municipal solid waste disposal facilities for the next ten years.

Completed in February of 2008 and fully operational that summer, residents of Kirkuk are now using the facility and avoiding the use of improper and unhealthy waste dumps.

This centerpiece of Kirkuk’s solid waste system includes storm water and drainage structures, access roads, administration offices, and a leachate collection, treatment and storage system. With a two-foot impermeable clay liner and a 60 mil HDPE liner the landfill is used as a model for the rest of Iraq. It is the first in the country to effectively comply with EPA standards.
